This summer, 13 students from six universities and four high schools joined the Foundation as summer interns. Intern projects covered technical device design, artificial intelligence (AI), finance, communications, and app development.

This year, the Foundation continued partnerships with Xavier University of Louisiana, the Economic Club of Washington’s Summer Internship Program, and Virginia Bio’s STEM2VA program.  We also hosted our first intern selected through the Access FUS internship program and supported by the Access FUS Scholars Initiative that was launched in 2022.

“This summer’s group of interns originated through several outside, like-minded institutions and produced several firsts,” said the Foundation’s Director of Extramural Research, Matt Eames, PhD. “On the engineering side, we conducted our first projects involving simulation-based acoustic lens design with k-Wave (Matlab) for clinical applications and our first live benchtop focused ultrasound demo for use at conference exhibits. In other areas, our interns spearheaded projects related to distribution of a Foundation-designed low-cost ultrasound characterization system to multiple sites across the US, creating a family tree or ‘connectome’ of the focused ultrasound research community, facilitated an in-house IT server migration, and bolstered the Foundation’s presence on social media.”
