2023 Summer Intern Report: Sean Fu

Background

Project
Utilizing Natural Language Processing and Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Accelerate Focused Ultrasound Database Expansion

Project Overview
My project was to create a system to efficiently and accurately process research papers involving the use of machine learning (ML) and AI technologies in focused ultrasound or focused ultrasound–adjacent fields. I manually categorized and extracted important information from each paper to build out a database.

Project Outcomes
I developed a model using ChatGPT combined with ML models and created an interface to enter PDFs and extract crucial information. I also modified an existing program to scrape PubMed for relevant articles to be processed and logged the information into the database.

Why were you initially interested in working with the Foundation?
Last year, I completed a science fair project identifying a potential cellular biomarker for epilepsy. Part of that project was creating a program to process and make predictions from cellular images. I was fortunate enough to receive an invitation to present my work at the Foundation. After I realized the Foundation had a summer internship option to work in ML/AI, I was extremely excited to join and pursue my existing interest in that.

Describe your experience as an intern.
I had an absolute blast as an intern. I was super passionate about my project and had wonderful mentors to support me along the way. I couldn’t imagine being able to interact and even form connections with high-level professors across the globe, but I was able to do just that. I also loved working with the other interns, as we formed a strong bond and helped each other out.

Did you complete your work at the Foundation’s offices or virtually? How do you think your location impacted your experience?
I completed my work in person at the office. It was really nice to work alongside the other interns and I think overall it enhanced the experience. I was more productive since I had others around to motivate me.

Has your internship affected your career plans?
The internship has consolidated what I want to do in the future. For a while, I have had an interest in computer science but was not sure exactly what I wanted to do with it. Now I’m certain I want to go down this path of ML and working with data.

I want to thank everyone at the Foundation for making my summer so enjoyable. All the staff are super supportive and passionate for the cause, and that really makes a difference!
