Foundation Hosts Glioblastoma Workshop
  • More than 260 attendees, including 60 experts from 58 institutions around the world, convened virtually to discuss focused ultrasound for glioblastomas (GBM).
  • The purpose of the meeting was to share knowledge, identify gaps in evidence, and create a roadmap for the technical developments, laboratory studies, and clinical trials necessary for focused ultrasound to progress in the treatment of GBM.

Meeting Report: Therapeutic Ultrasound in Oncology Symposium
  • Experts from four research sites and the Foundation discussed focused ultrasound for cancer at the Society for Thermal Medicine’s virtual symposium.
  • Topics included pelvic and head/neck cancer, liver tumors, microbubbles and radiotherapy, and ablative therapies.  
  • The Foundation sponsored this important meeting.

Meeting Report: Focused Ultrasound Non-Invasive Neurosurgery Congress
  • The event marked one year since the first transcranial MR-guided focused ultrasound center in Ufa, Russia, opened.
  • The online congress featured speakers from Japan, Taiwan, Spain, United Kingdom, and Russia.

New Preclinical Device for Focused Ultrasound in Glioblastoma
  • French researchers developed a device to provide focused ultrasound blood-brain barrier opening and continuous wave laser photothermal therapy.
  • The one-transducer system uses real-time photoacoustic in situ temperature monitoring.  
  • It will be used to treat glioblastoma models.

Focused Ultrasound Treatment Provides Sustained Efficacy for Essential Tremor
  • Researchers evaluated the long-term benefit of focused ultrasound treatment of essential tremor.
  • Data from 395 patients revealed hand tremors significantly improved from baseline to 24 months post-treatment, possibly lasting up to 48 months post-treatment and beyond.

Update: CMS Decides to Further Delay MCIT Pathway 
  • The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have delayed the implementation of the Medicare Coverage of Innovative Technology (MCIT) program until December 15. 
  • The MCIT will provide immediate, national coverage for breakthrough devices or diagnostics approved by the FDA.
  • The Foundation and our partners are disappointed by the delay.
