For more than a decade, Howard Eisenberg, MD, has been a cornerstone of the focused ultrasound program at the University of Maryland. His work is primarily treating movement disorders – like essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease – and pain. The Maryland team offers focused ultrasound both in clinical trials and commercial treatments.

The 107th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) was held November 28 through December 2, 2021, in Chicago. In the “Best of Clinical Trials at RSNA 2021” session, one trial of Profound’s TULSA-PRO device and two trials using the Insightec Exablate body system were highlighted.

A collaborative research team retrospectively analyzed 123 cases of MR-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy. The study compared treatment parameters, lesion characteristics, adverse events, and outcomes in a case series performed in the same center by one neurosurgeon. The data can be used to improve future treatment planning and performance.
