American Cancer Society

Submission Deadlines: April 1, 2023 and April 3, 2023

Health Equity Research in Cancer Control and Prevention
The American Cancer Society Extramural Discovery Science Department identifies research addressing cancer health equity and health disparities as a priority within the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program. This includes research: to understand, identify, and/or define modifiable and unjust factors that contribute to or sustain inequity (e.g. resources, access to care, behaviors, quality of care); and that leads to a sustained reduction in disparities and/or equitable outcomes in cancer.

Applicants can apply for this special initiative through other grant pipelines: Research Scholar Grant, Clinician Scientist Development Grant, Postdoctoral Fellowship, or Clinical Research Professor Award.

AHEAD (Advancing Health Equity and Addressing Cancer Disparities) Awards (up to $300,000)
The American Cancer Society’s AHEAD (Advancing Health Equity and Addressing Cancer Disparities) Awards intended to fund pilot, first-in-field, innovative strategies that increase quality cancer screening, clinical trials—and cancer care closer to home. Each award is for 2 years with $125,000 direct costs each year plus 20% allowable indirect costs, for a total amount of up to $300,000.

Research Scholar Grants ($660,000/4 years)
Research Scholar Grants provide support for independent, self-directed researchers and clinician scientists, who are investigators licensed to provide patient care and trained to conduct research.

Postdoctoral Fellowships (up to $204,000/3 years)
Postdoctoral Fellowships support new investigators in research training programs to to position them for independent careers in cancer research. As part of their evaluation, peer reviewers consider how well the fellowship will broaden the applicant’s research training and experience.

Clinician Scientist Development Grant (up to $675,000)
The American Cancer Society (ACS) and the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) have partnered to co-fund one Clinician Scientist Development Grant (CSDG). The goal of the ASTRO-ACS CSDG is to foster the research career of a clinician scientist in radiation oncology. The investigator selected for funding will be required to become a member of ASTRO prior to grant activation.

Discovery Boost Grants (up to $250,000)
Discovery Boost Grants (DBG) support high-risk, high-reward exploratory cancer research across the research continuum. Investigators may focus on developing research methodologies, establishing feasibility, or leading pilot tests. It is expected that preliminary data generated from a completed DBG will have the potential to secure additional grant funding to further the research and open new and highly innovative areas for investigation.

Institutional Research Grants (up to $360,000)
Institutional Research Grants are awarded to institutions as block grants, providing seed money for newly independent investigators to initiate cancer research projects. The intent is to support these junior faculty in initiating cancer research projects so they can obtain preliminary results that will enable them to compete successfully for national research grants.

Mission Boost Grants: Stage 1 ($200,000)
Mission Boost Grants (MBG) are designed to support select current and past ACS grantees specifically for the translation of their research to human testing. MBGs are opportunities for American Cancer Society (ACS) grantees to seek additional, or “boost,” resources for innovative, high-risk/high-reward projects. MBGs offer 2 stages of funding: Stage I requires the investigator to develop outcome-specific, unequivocal milestones that reduce the risks of studying a new drug, device, or procedure in patients. Stage II supports testing in cancer patients.

Mission Boost Grants: Stage 2 ($500,000)
Mission Boost Grants (MBG) are designed to support select current and past ACS grantees specifically for the translation of their research to human testing. MBGs are opportunities for American Cancer Society (ACS) grantees to seek additional, or “boost,” resources for innovative, high-risk/high-reward projects. MBGs offer 2 stages of funding: Stage I requires the investigator to develop outcome-specific, unequivocal milestones that reduce the risks of studying a new drug, device, or procedure in patients. Stage II supports testing in cancer patients.

ACS Screening: Interdisciplinary Team Award ($1,200,000)
Funds an independent research project that advances cancer screening and early detection.

ACS Screening: Research Scholar Grant ($660,000) – Provides protected time (minimum of 50%) for junior faculty to be mentored and participate in cancer screening and early detection research training to aid their development as independent clinician scientists.
