Prominent Economist, Alicia García Herrero, PhD, Joins Foundation’s Council

Alicia García Herrero, PhD

The Foundation is pleased to welcome Alicia García Herrero, PhD, chief economist for Asia Pacific at the French investment bank Natixis, to its Council, a group of passionate individuals who help build awareness and raise funds for focused ultrasound. 

Based in Hong Kong, Dr. García Herrero is also an independent Board Member of AGEAS insurance group and adjunct professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She is also a Senior Fellow at both the European think-tank BRUEGEL and the East Asian Institute of the National University Singapore.  

Throughout her career in economics, Dr. García Herrero has held positions at leading international banks, including Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, the Bank of International Settlements, the Bank of Spain, the European Central Bank, Banco Santander, and the International Monetary Fund. She has also been a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University, China Europe International Business School, and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. 

Dr. García Herrero serves on the board or in an advisory role for a number of organizations, including the Center for Asia-Pacific Resilience and Innovation, the Spanish Government, the Berlin-based Mercator Institute for China Studies, and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s research arm.  

“Alicia is a tremendous asset to the Council with her economic mindset and her enthusiasm for the potential of focused ultrasound,” said Foundation Chairman Neal F. Kassell, MD. “She has been a friend to the Foundation for several years, and we are delighted that she is officially part of the team.” 

She holds a PhD in economics from George Washington University and has published extensively in refereed journals and books. She has also been recognized for her thought leadership, ranking among the TOP Voices in Economy and Finance by LinkedIn in 2017 and #6 Top Social Media leader by Refinitiv in 2020

“Since I attended a presentation by Dr. Kassell in Hong Kong in 2019 on what focused ultrasound technologies can do for us, I have been simply amazed by its potential and what it could mean for literally anyone in this world, as any of us may suffer from cancer, Alzheimer’s, or Parkinson’s,” said Dr. García Herrero. “I cannot think of any better venue in which to invest my time and energy than the Council of this wonderful Foundation.
