Gabsoo Han, who lives in Korea, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at age 68. He recently shared his experience participating in a focused ultrasound clinical trial at Seoul National University Hospital. Focused ultrasound provided Mr. Han with a noninvasive treatment alternative that shortened his chemotherapy regimen and led to a positive outcome.

My name is Gabsoo Han. I was born in 1953 and am currently 70 years old, even though my registered age is 69 due to a delayed registration. I live in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, part of the Seoul Satellite City, with my wife. I have two daughters who are married. When I was young, I worked as a salary man before starting my own business 20 years ago. I produce products like interior films as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and supply them to distributors.
제 이름은 한 갑수입니다. 저는 원래53년에 태어났고 나이는 70세입니다만 호적에는 1년 늦게 등록이 되어 만 69세입니다. 서울 위성도시인 경기도 용인에서 아내와 함께 살고 있습니다. 가족으로는 출가한 두 딸이 있습니다. 젊을 때는 직장생활을 하다가 20년 전부터 인테리어 필름 같은 제품을 OEM으로 만들어서 총판으로 대리점에게 공급하는 개인 사업을 하고 있습니다.
When did your symptoms start?
언제증상이시작되었나요?
In September of 2021, I felt some discomfort in my stomach, so I went to a local clinic for an examination. I hadn’t experienced any pain until then, and I hadn’t undergone a comprehensive checkup for five years due to a busy schedule. During the checkup, an ultrasound revealed signs of pancreatic cancer. I then underwent detailed examinations such as CT and MRI scans at Ajou University Hospital in Suwon, where the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer was confirmed.
21년 9월인가 속이 좀 불편해서 동네 의원으로 진료를 받으러 갔습니다. 진료를 받긴 했지만 통증이 있었던 것도 아니었습니다. 종합검진도 바쁘다는 핑계로5년동안 안 받다가 속이 안 좋았기에 종합검진을 받게 되었습니다. 초음파 검사에서 췌장암인 것 같다는 소견을 받아서 수원에 있는 아주대 병원으로 가서 CT, MRI 등 정밀 검사를 받고 거기서 췌장암으로 확진 되었습니다.

The CT scan indicated that the size of the tumor was approximately 3 to 3.5 cm. When I first heard about pancreatic cancer at Ajou University Hospital, I didn’t know much about it. After the diagnosis, I learned from the internet and heard from friends and neighbors that pancreatic cancer was relatively uncommon in the past but is increasing, with a low survival rate of around 5%. This information made me anxious, and I had many questions and found it emotionally challenging.
CT 영상에서 췌장암 크기가 3~3.5cm 정도 되었다고 들었습니다. 처음 아주대 병원에서 췌장암이라는 얘기를 들었을 때는 췌장암에 대해서 잘 알지도 못했습니다. 진단을 받은 후 인터넷이나 지인등 주위에 알아보니 옛날에는 췌장암 환자가 많지 않았는데 점점 더 증가하고 있고, 완치율이 낮아서 5% 정도 밖에 되지 않는 고약한 암이라는 얘기를 듣고는 불안하기도 하고 궁금한 점도 많고 심적으로 많이 힘들었습니다.
What treatment options did you first explore/did your doctor offer?
처음에 어떤 치료 방법에 대해서 살펴보았나요? 혹은 의사 선생님께서 권하는 치료 방법은 처음에 무엇이었나요?
A doctor from Ajou University Hospital recommended surgery for my cancer. However, my family urged me to seek a second opinion at a larger hospital in Seoul to confirm the diagnosis and explore other treatment options. Upon visiting Seoul National University Hospital, I initially visited a surgeon, thinking that pancreatic cancer treatment was primarily surgical. However, the surgeon referred me to Professor Sang-hyub Lee, a gastroenterologist.
아주대 병원에서는 췌장암 수술을 하자는 권유를 받았습니다. 그런데 가족들이 서울에 있는 큰 병원으로 가서 다시 진단에 대한 확인도 받고 치료방법도 알아보자고 적극적으로 권해서 서울대 병원을 오게 되었습니다. 서울대 병원에 와서도 췌장암 치료를 수술로만 하는 줄 알고 처음에는 외과를 예약했었습니다. 그런데 외과 선생님이 지금 제 주치의 이신 소화기내과 이상협 선생님 소개를 해 주셨습니다.
When did you first hear about focused ultrasound?
언제집속초음파에대해서처음들었는지요?
While hospitalized for the biopsy and chemotherapy treatment, Professor Sang-hyub Lee introduced me to research on treating pancreatic cancer with focused ultrasound. Until then, I was unaware of such technology. Originally, I had planned to undergo a total of 16 rounds of chemotherapy treatment. The chemotherapy was a painful experience—skipping meals, feeling weak, and experiencing significant discomfort. The chemotherapy treatment process was very challenging.
조직 검사 및 항암 치료를 위해 입원하고 있는 중에 이상협 교수님으로부터 집속초음파로 췌장암을 치료하는 연구가 있다는 소개를 받았습니다. 그 때 까지는 이런 기술이 있는지도 몰랐습니다. 원래는 16번 항암치료를 받을 계획이었습니다. 항암 치료하는 동안에는 너무 고통스러웠습니다. 오전에 식사도 못하고 기운도 없고 속이 울렁울렁 하는 것이 아주 심했습니다. 그런 항암 치료과정이 참 힘들었습니다.
Why did you decide to take part in a clinical trial?
어떤이유로임상시험에참여하기로결정하게되었는지요?
I trusted Prof. Sang-hyub Lee, who had written a book on pancreatic cancer diagnosis and treatment from his extensive experience treating patients. There are three reasons I chose to participate in the clinical trial: the assurance of safety, the opportunity to have the treatment free of cost, and the possibility that participating in a clinical trial could open doors for more people to receive treatment. Professor Jae Young Lee, a radiologist, also reiterated that my participation will contribute to the development of the early stage of this technique, so I’m pleased to participate in this clinical trial. At the beginning, the chemotherapy treatment was done with simultaneous focused ultrasound treatment. Due to positive treatment results, I only received eight rounds of chemotherapy treatment, and it was not necessary to proceed further with the chemotherapy. With focused ultrasound treatment alone, I felt that it’s worthy to live. Whenever I was treated by focused ultrasound, I was peaceful due to no pain, so my life became stable. I am so grateful for the opportunity to get treated as part of this clinical trial.
췌장암 진단과 치료에 대해서 책도 쓰고 많은 환자를 치료했던 경험도 많은 이상협 교수님을 믿고 임상 시험에 참여하기로 했습니다. 일단 안전하다는 말씀과 지원을 받아서 치료 받을 수 있는 좋은 기회라는 권유, 그리고 무엇보다 임상시험에 참여하게 되면 이러한 결과로 더 많은 사람들이 치료받을 수 있는 가능성이 열릴 수 있다는 말씀에 선뜻 임상시험에 참여하기로 동의하게 되었습니다. 초음파 치료해 주시는 이재영 교수님 설명을 통해서도 이 기술은 위험하지도 않고 기술발전에도 도움이 될 수 있다고 해서 기쁘게 참여하게 되었습니다.
처음에는 항암치료와 집속초음파 치료를 병행하게 되었는데, 저 같은 경우 치료 결과가 좋아서 8번 항암치료를 받고는 더 이상 항암치료를 진행하지 않게 되었습니다. 항암치료를 받지 않으니 살 것 같았습니다. 초음파 치료할 때는 마음도 편안하고 고통도 없어서 안정적인 삶을 살 수 있게 되었습니다. 그 때 임상시험 기회가 주어진 것도 감사하고 이렇게 잘 치료 받게 되어서 감사할 뿐입니다.
What was the treatment itself like?

When I met others receiving ultrasound treatment at this hospital, some mentioned experiencing pain and taking painkillers. On the first day of treatment, I didn’t feel very anxious or uneasy – probably because the chemotherapy regimen was so difficult. Prof. Jae Young Lee and Nurse Soo-yeon Kang, who performed the focused ultrasound treatment for my pancreatic cancer, provided clear guidance and explanations, keeping me peaceful during the treatment. I felt no pain during the treatment, so I was calm without worries. I had confidence in the technology and was hopeful of a good outcome. Watching the ultrasound images, I was told that the cancer had significantly reduced through repeated treatments, making me even more comfortable and hopeful.
여기 병원에서 다른 초음파로 치료받는 분들도 만나 보았는데 통증도 있다고 하고 그래서 진통제도 맞는다고 했었습니다. 그런데 저는 항암치료가 힘들어서 그랬는지, 처음 치료 받는 날 항암치료 때와는 다르게 불안하지도 않고 마음이 안정되었습니다. 초음파 장비로 췌장암 치료를 해 주시는 이재영 교수님과 강수연 간호 선생님이 안내와 설명을 잘 해 주셔서 평안한 가운데 치료를 받을 수 있었고, 저는 치료받는 동안 통증도 없었습니다. 마음도 불안하지 않고 차분했습니다. 이 기술과 임상시험에 대한 신뢰가 되어 오히려 기대하는 마음도 컸었습니다. 그 이후에 반복되는 초음파 치료를 통해서 췌장암도 많이 줄어들었다는 설명을 초음파 영상을 보면서 해 주셔서 더욱 편안했고 기대가 되고 했습니다.
How did you feel going home from treatment?
치료후에집에돌아갔을때어떻게느꼈나요?
While receiving treatment, Prof. Lee and Nurse Kang explained the details of which areas were treated and how much progress had been made through ultrasound images, making me feel comfortable. After two weeks, when I returned for the second treatment, I was more confident. For each treatment, I was hospitalized for three days and two nights. I could finish four focused ultrasound treatments almost every other week, though there were unexpected delays due to COVID-19. I felt no discomfort during the treatments. My mind was calm, and now I have returned to my daily life.
치료받는 동안 초음파 영상으로 어떤 부위가 얼마나 치료가 되었다는 설명을 이재영 교수님과 강수연 선생님으로부터 자세히 듣고는 마음이 더 편해졌고, 2주가 지나서 다시 치료를 받을 때는 더 확신이 생겼습니다. 치료 받을 때는 2박 3일 입원을 했었고 코로나 기간이라서 변동적이긴 했지만 전반적으로 2주에 한 번 정도씩 4번 치료를 다 받았는데 치료를 받으면서 불편한 적이 없었고 마음도 차분했으며 이제는 일상생활로 돌아오게 되었어요.
Describe your life now.
현재어떤삶을사시는지얘기해주세요.
I am no longer undergoing cancer treatment, and I have resumed my daily life, even reopened my business. Considering my health when I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and during chemotherapy treatment, I am now remarkably healthy. I have gained back much of the weight I lost – up to 55 kg (or 120 pounds) – and I am currently maintaining a good digestion and eating well. Although my weight has not increased significantly, I hope to gain an additional 3-4 kg (6-8 pounds). Besides that, I feel healthy and am back to running my business.
Currently, I undergo regular check-ups with CT scans every three months, and I’m advised to visit the surgery department after a year. Thanks to advanced technology, even as a pancreatic cancer patient with a low survival rate, I am grateful to receive treatment and to enjoy a normal life.
더 이상 항암치료도 하지 않고 이제는 일상생활을 하고 있고 다시 사업도 하게 되었습니다. 췌장암 진단을 받았을 때나 항암치료 받을 때는 생각지도 못할 만큼 건강하게 지내고 있습니다. 항암 치료를 받으면서 55kg까지 줄었던 몸무게가 많이 회복되고 있습니다. 지금은 소화도 잘 되고 밥도 잘 먹고 있는데 몸무게는 잘 늘지 않고 있는데 체중이3~4kg 더 늘었으면 좋겠습니다. 그 외에는 아주 건강해서 지금은 하던 사업장에 나가서 사업을 계속하고 있습니다.
지금은 3개월에 한 번씩 CT 영상 촬영을 하면서 정기적인 검진을 받고 있고 외과에는 1년후에나 찾아가면 된다고 합니다. 이렇게 생존률이 적은 나쁜 췌장암 환자가 좋은 기술 덕분에 치료 받고 일상생활을 하게 된 것이 감사할 뿐입니다.

Prof. Sang-hyub Lee, Prof. Jae Young Lee, and Nurse Soo-yeon Kang, I cannot express enough gratitude for your efforts. Meeting such a valuable team has been a great stroke of luck for me. I hope that university hospitals will continue to conduct clinical trials for pancreatic cancer patients like me. I sincerely wish for the continued development of focused ultrasound technology. I also have a message for other patients. With the abundance of information on the internet, there are cases where people may not trust doctors. I recommend trusting and consulting with doctors to determine the best treatment plan.

What are your thoughts about the Foundation in funding this trial and others to advance focused ultrasound?
집속초음파 기술을 발전시키기 위해서 선생님과 다른 환자분들의 임상시험을 지원한 집속초음파 재단에 대한 생각을 말씀해 주시겠어요?
Thanks to professors and researchers who are developing and advancing focused ultrasound technology, I have been able to receive treatment for pancreatic cancer and return to daily life. I am also very grateful for the Focused Ultrasound Foundation’s support of the clinical trial, and I would be grateful for the Foundation’s continued support of clinical trials like this one. Please continue to strive for the development of focused ultrasound technology, which, in my case, caused less pain and provides effective treatment.
