The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) has partnered with the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to streamline access to affordable, high-quality medical imaging data.

In this first-of-its-kind collaboration, the agencies aim to create a medical imaging data marketplace (MIDM) to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) innovation by making imaging data – such as those derived from digital pathology or medical scans – more readily available.

The goal of the MIDM is to make it easier and faster for researchers and companies, especially those pioneering AI-enabled medical devices, to access relevant datasets to complete their work or apply for regulatory approvals. The Office of Science and Engineering Labs (OSEL) will develop and establish the operating procedures and governance structure for the MIDM.

“The advancement of AI and ML applications holds tremendous potential to increase the utility of medical imaging data, but ensuring this data aligns with regulatory standards and is representative of the US population is a unique challenge,” said ARPA-H Deputy Director Susan Monarez.

To launch the program, the agencies are asking all stakeholders with relevant experience and expertise – including those beyond the current Investor Catalyst Hub network – to complete a survey on the design and development of a sustainable, affordable, diverse, and secure federated medical imaging data platform. This feedback will be used by ARPA-H as it considers a future program on a medical imaging data marketplace.

The deadline to provide feedback is April 16. ARPA-H will summarize the data from the survey and incorporate the findings into the program design and strategy for the future MIDM effort.
