Targeted Neurostimulation in Mouse Brains with Non-invasive Ultrasound
Researchers from Hong Kong Polytechnic University led by Lei Sun, PhD, used low-intensity focused ultrasound and cellular engineering to develop a new neuromodulation strategy that is neuron- and region-specific.
To make specific brain cells sensitive to ultrasound, Dr. Sun’s group engineered neurons in the cerebral cortex and dorsomedial striatum of mice so that the cells would contain mechanically sensitive ion channels. After insertion, the researchers can manipulate the ion channels by mechanically applying ultrasound. Developing the ability to use neuromodulation to control brain activity will help researchers gain insight into brain functions and treat brain disorders.
