Focused Ultrasound for Parkinson’s Dementia: First-in-Human Data Published
  • People living with Parkinson's disease sometimes develop memory loss, forgetfulness, trouble concentrating, and eventually dementia.
  • A collaborative team of researchers led by Prof. José Obeso, MD, PhD, is seeking to use focused ultrasound to address this devastating complication.
  • The research team successfully used focused ultrasound to open the blood-brain barrier in people with Parkinson’s dementia, and the procedure was well tolerated.

Apply Now: Andrew J. Lockhart Postdoctoral Fellowship in Focused Ultrasound and Immuno-Oncology
  • This one-year fellowship will pair an early-career scientist with leading laboratories to foster focused ultrasound and immuno-oncology research. 
  • The award includes a $75,000 stipend.
  • The fellowship was established last year through the generosity of the Lockhart family in memory of their son.
  • The deadline to apply is September 16.

Report Finds Few Cancer Patients in the UK Offered Noninvasive Therapies
  • An All-Party Parliamentary Group report found that only 10 percent of cancer patients in the UK are offered noninvasive treatments.
  • Its recommendations included training sufficient medical personnel to perform noninvasive therapies, such as focused ultrasound.
  • The group brings together different political parties to drive awareness of minimally invasive treatments.

Meeting Report: Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) 2022
  • SIR held its annual meeting in Boston from June 11–16.
  • There were seven scientific presentations on focused ultrasound, and two manufacturers in the field participated.
  • A Foundation-sponsored reception and several educational sessions focused on cultivating the next generation of interventional radiologists.

French Student Receives Grand Prize for Focused Ultrasound Research for Depression
  • Thomas Tiennot won a Grand Prize in the i-PhD contest, which recognizes research that could launch a start-up company.
  • His research involves using transcranial neuromodulation in patients with drug-resistant depression.
  • Tiennot is part of the Physics for Medicine Paris team, which is a Focused Ultrasound Center of Excellence.

Biomedical Technology Prize to Recognize Innovators Impacting Health
  • The Richard N. Merkin Prize in Biomedical Technology will recognize scientists who have developed technologies that substantially impact human health.
  • Up to four awards of at least $400,000 will be given annually.
  • Dr. Merkin has advanced biomedical research that improves lives and is a longtime Foundation supporter.

Submit an Abstract for ISBUS 2022
  • The inaugural International Symposium on Biomolecular Ultrasound and Sonogenetics (ISBUS) will be held December 8-11 in Pasadena, California.
  • The meeting will cover biomolecular and genetic approaches to ultrasonic imaging and control of cellular function.
  • The abstract submission deadline is September 5.
