Focused Ultrasound Foundation and Children’s Tumor Foundation Partner on Neurofibromatosis Study
  • The Foundation has established a partnership with the Children’s Tumor Foundation to advance innovative, noninvasive treatments in pediatrics.
  • The organizations are co-funding an early-stage laboratory study – led by Tyrone Porter, PhD – to investigate focused ultrasound’s role in addressing neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2).
  • NF2 is a rare genetic condition that causes tumors to grow along nerves.

  • The fellowship was established through the generosity of the Lockhart family in memory of their son.
  • The award includes a $75,000 stipend, and the deadline to apply is September 16. 

Advocacy Update: MITA Supports Uterine Fibroid Medicare Payment
  • The Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance (MITA) publicly supports a bill that would explore Medicaid coverage of uterine fibroid treatment options, like focused ultrasound.

  • Drs. Eyal Zadicario, Wladyslaw Gedroyc, and Neal Kassell share the impact that Dr. Vortman has had on their lives and the field.

Foundation-Funded Research Update: Delivering Gene Therapies to the Brain in a Model of Parkinson’s Disease
  • Viral gene therapies can be a promising treatment for Parkinson’s disease, but many cannot cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in therapeutically relevant doses.
  • Researchers created a novel gene therapy method and used focused ultrasound to deliver it across the BBB in a preclinical model.
  • Analyses showed that the newly inserted genes were being expressed in one of two targeted brain regions.

Meeting Report: American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ASSFN) 2022
  • The biennial meeting of ASSFN was held June 4–7 in Atlanta.
  • The conference was designed with daily plenary sessions followed by topic-based parallel sessions.
  • The parallel sessions included two focused ultrasound presentations.

Meeting Report: International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society (ISRS) 2022
  • The 15th ISRS Congress was held June 19–23 in Milan.
  • More than 700 attendees from over 50 countries listened to presentations from 209 speakers.

Medicare Proposes Reimbursement Rate Increase for HIFU Prostate Treatments
  • The US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has proposed a rule that, if approved, would increase the reimbursement that treatment sites receive for performing focused ultrasound for the prostate.
  • Two HIFU manufacturers publicly support the proposed rule.
  • The comment period closes September 13, and we encourage those in the field to voice their support.

Acoustiic Closes Funding Round and Plans Expansion
  • Acoustiic is creating a compact, versatile focused ultrasound system to treat many potential clinical indications, including liver and pancreatic cancer.
  • The funding will allow the company to accelerate production of its therapy system and continue developing next-generation systems.
  • Acoustiic has also expanded its team of experts in medical device manufacturing and delivery.
