Cost-effectiveness Analysis of MR-guided Focused Ultrasound Thalamotomy for Tremor-dominant Parkinson’s Disease

researchroundupTo compare the cost of using focused ultrasound, deep brain stimulation (DBS), or medical therapy to treat patients with Parkinson’s tremor, health economics researchers in Toronto analyzed patient and physician usage data for each type of treatment. They found unilateral focused ultrasound thalamotomy to be cost-effective in Canada, especially when compared with continued medical therapy. Cost-wise, it did not outperform DBS, but remained competitive with the more invasive stimulation treatment.
