UVA Health, Focused Ultrasound Foundation Partner to Create World’s First Focused Ultrasound Cancer Immunotherapy Center
  • The Foundation and UVA Health have launched the Focused Ultrasound Cancer Immunotherapy Center, the world's first center dedicated to advancing a focused ultrasound and cancer immunotherapy treatment approach.
  • A central goal of the center is to better understand focused ultrasound's ability to improve a patient's immune response to cancer.
  • Three groundbreaking trials are already underway at UVA exploring focused ultrasound's impact on the immune response of patients with breast cancers and solid tumors.

Partial Histotripsy Ablation Induces Complete Tumor Regression in Liver Cancer
  • A research team led by Zhen Xu, PhD, recently published preclinical work investigating whether partial histotripsy ablation could result in complete tumor regression in a model of liver cancer.
  • The group also evaluated survival, immune response, and risk of metastases.
  • Histotripsy significantly improved survival and increased immune infiltration of the treated and untreated tumors.

Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (LIFUS) Neuromodulation for Epilepsy
  • LIFUS neuromodulation is a rapidly emerging technology being studied to treat neurologic and psychiatric disorders, including epilepsy.
  • The technique may be a promising treatment for epilepsy because it can reach the lateral cortex and deep brain structures.
  • A clinical trial at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is using LIFUS for serial treatments of the hippocampus in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.

Skin Cancer Clinical Trial Begins in Denmark
  • A clinical trial using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to treat basal cell carcinoma (BCC) has begun in Denmark.
  • BCC is a common, rarely fatal type of skin cancer that is found in areas of the skin exposed to the sun.
  • Up to 40 participants will be treated with the TOOsonix System ONE-M HIFU device.
