New Focused Ultrasound Prostate Device Receives FDA Clearance
 
  • Insightec has announced that its Exablate Prostate focused ultrasound system has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ablate prostate tissue.
  • The ruling enables physicians to use the device to treat prostate disorders like cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
  • The noninvasive procedure is completed in a single session under MR-guidance and targets focal ablation of the abnormal prostate tissue, with the surrounding normal tissue remaining intact.
  • This is the fourth focused ultrasound device approved in the US to treat the prostate.

Focused Ultrasound and Cancer Immunotherapy: Research Funding Available
  • The Foundation seeks to fund cancer immunotherapy projects that address focused ultrasound’s effects on the tumor vasculature or partial versus total tumor ablation outcomes.
  • Clinical phase 1 or window-of-opportunity trials combining focused ultrasound with an immunotherapeutic are also of interest.

Natasha Sheybani, PhD, Named to Forbes 30 Under 30 List
  • Dr. Sheybani, assistant professor at the University of Virginia, was included in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Science list for 2022.
  • She previously served as a Foundation senior scientist, and the Foundation has funded her research.
  • Her work aims to advance noninvasive precision immunotherapy in solid cancers using focused ultrasound.

Korean Alzheimer’s Disease Study Results Published
  • Researchers in Seoul, Korea, have published results from a study using focused ultrasound to open the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
  • The clinical trial enrolled six participants to study the procedure’s safety, feasibility, and possible efficacy when opening the BBB.
  • Participants were treated twice, three months apart.

Results of Focused Ultrasound for Essential Tremor and Parkinson’s Disease Published
  • A collaborative research team retrospectively analyzed 123 cases of MR-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy.
  • The study compared treatment parameters, lesion characteristics, adverse events, and outcomes in a case series performed in the same center by one neurosurgeon.
  • The data can be used to improve future treatment planning and performance.

A New System for Brain Histotripsy
  • A research team at the University of Michigan designed and tested a transcranial, MR-guided histotripsy system for use in various brain surgery applications.
  • The large animal study delivered transcranial histotripsy with a 700-kHz, 128-element phased-array transducer.
  • Results showed well-confined lesions within the targeted volume and no bleeding or edema outside the ablation zones.

  • The MYCHOICE trial protocol compares standard uterine fibroid care to focused ultrasound.
  • Researchers in the Netherlands hope to raise awareness of the trial among local physicians and patients and researchers around the world.

Meeting Report: SNO's 26th Annual Meeting and Education Day
  • The Society of Neuro-Oncology (SNO) held its annual meeting in Boston from November 18-21.
  • Presentations on glioblastoma, diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas, and immunotherapy were particularly applicable to focused ultrasound research. 
  • One of the education day topics was biomarkers and precision design for clinical trials.

$12.1 Million in Funding Announced to Preserve Equity in Biomedical Research
  • A collaborative group of foundations has announced more than $12.1 million in grants to support early-career faculty at US medical schools.
  • Twenty-two schools and affiliated hospitals will receive grants of $550,000 each to deploy programs that enable faculty to continue their research programs.  
  • The initiative is intended to retain researchers who have been affected by the caregiving crisis caused by the pandemic.
