  • Professor Gail ter Haar, an expert in focused ultrasound and physics, is the recipient of this year’s Visionary Award.
  • She leads the therapeutic ultrasound team at The Institute for Cancer Research and is founding President of the International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound.
  • At the meeting, she will address the future of therapeutic ultrasound and lessons to be learned from the past.

Submit Your Nominations for the Ferenc Jolesz Memorial Award
  • The award honors the late Ferenc Jolesz and recognizes an innovative spirit in a mid-career investigator conducting focused ultrasound research.
  • The recipient will receive a $5,000 cash award and up to $5,000 in travel expenses for Symposium attendance.
  • The award is supported by Insightec, and nominations will be accepted through Monday, June 6.

Improving Focused Ultrasound Blood-Brain Barrier Opening
  • Researchers sought to improve how focused ultrasound is used to open the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in preclinical studies.
  • The group synthesized and analyzed two protein binders that weaken the BBB before applying ultrasound energy.
  • Pretreatment incubation of tight junction proteins with clinically suitable binders may improve BBB opening and increase the therapeutic window.

NIH’s Research Initiatives Secure Increased Funding
  • Congress recently passed a bill that includes $620 million for the NIH BRAIN Initiative – $60 million more than in 2021.
