This week, the United States Congress will vote on 21st Century Cures legislation that is critical to keep the US at the forefront of medical innovation and accelerate new therapies into clinical practice.

Announced in 2014, the 21st Century Cures initiative produced legislation that has been negotiated in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, but this vote is its last chance for passage.

The initiative has assessed all stages of discovery, development, and delivery of new medical therapies, and the legislation proposes resources and changes needed to reduce barriers to progress and accelerate treatments and cures. If passed, the bill could allocate up to $5 billion in new funding for the NIH, in part to sustain the Cancer Moonshot, Precision Medicine Initiative, and BRAIN Initiative

The Foundation has closely followed the 21st Century Cures efforts because they are aligned with our mission to bring new technologies to patients in the shortest time possible. There is an immediate need to streamline and update the medical research and regulatory process.
