Milken Institute Chairman Michael Milken will discuss his personal journey to the frontiers of medical science as part of a multimedia presentation at the Foundation’s 7th International Symposium on Focused Ultrasound.
Once lauded as “The Man Who Changed Medicine” by Fortune magazine, Mike has dedicated nearly half a century to accelerating medical research and advancing public health. In 1982, he formalized his previous philanthropy by co-founding the Milken Family Foundation, a leader in education, public health and worldwide research on a wide range of life-threatening diseases.
Mike is also Chairman of the Milken Institute, which hosts more than 250 annual events around the world including major conferences in Singapore, London, Abu Dhabi, Los Angeles, and Washington. One of its 10 centers, FasterCures, is a close partner of the Foundation, each sharing in the effort to remove barriers to progress in medical research. The Foundation has also been invited to participate in a number of the Milken Institute’s events to spread awareness about the life-changing potential focused ultrasound.
“I have known Mike for 50 years, and I can say with total conviction that, by virtue of his unparalleled ability to amalgamate the forces of both the public and private sectors, no one has done more to advance medical research,” said Foundation Chairman Neal F. Kassell, MD.
When the COVID-19 pandemic swept the world this spring, Mike drew on his experience working with leaders in public health and medical research to redirect the efforts of his medical foundations, the Milken Institute’s centers, and the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University in Washington, DC. They connected industry, public health schools, and government agencies to expedite treatments and address shortages; provide policy recommendations; and disseminate accurate information.
Mike graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with highest honors and earned his MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He has been a valued member of the Foundation’s Council since 2012.
The 7th International Symposium on Focused Ultrasound will be held virtually November 9-13, 2020.
