Professor Daniel Jeanmonod’s neurosurgery group in Switzerland recently published their center’s experience using focused ultrasound thalamotomy as a treatment for facial pain caused by trigeminal neuralgia. The group bilaterally treated eight patients who were unresponsive to antiepileptic and antidepressant drugs. This group of patients experienced a 51% reduction in pain relief after three months that improved to 78% at the longest follow-up period. The study provides initial safety and efficacy data for this novel indication.
