The Foundation is pleased to welcome Philip Bergman, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVIM-Oncology, to the team as a consultant to the veterinary and the cancer immunotherapy programs.

An expert in veterinary oncology, Dr. Bergman served as director of clinical studies for VCA Animal Hospitals from 2011 to 2023 and as global director for Mars Veterinary Health in 2024. He was also previously chief medical officer for BrightHeart Veterinary Centers and the head of the Donaldson-Atwood Cancer Center at the Animal Medical Center in New York.

Dr. Bergman is the principal veterinary investigator for the fully licensed canine melanoma vaccine, called Oncept. He is also an adjunct faculty member of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and was previously chair of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Board of Regents and President of the Veterinary Cancer Society.

“Phil is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities on veterinary cancer and immunotherapy,” said Foundation Chairman Neal F. Kassell, MD. “His experience and reputation in animal care will be a hugely valuable asset to the team and advance the adoption of focused ultrasound for veterinary indications as well as human diseases.”

“I am incredibly excited and honored to join the Focused Ultrasound Foundation team,” said Dr. Bergman. “I have watched from afar over the last five to six years whereby this technology has grown from research and development to multiple human clinical applications. It is my sincere hope that we can do the same with this amazing technology in veterinary medicine over the next five years.”

Dr. Bergman received his DVM and MS in medical oncology from Colorado State University and completed a PhD fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
