Promising Results in FUS Breast Cancer Study

Published:

Results of a study presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) suggest MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) may offer a safe, noninvasive treatment option for breast cancer.

Dr. Alessandro Napoli, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of radiology at Sapienza University in Rome, presented the results of his study involving 12 patients with invasive ductal breast cancer. All patients were treated with MRgFUS, and post-treatment, histological evaluation confirmed the absence of residual disease in the treatment area in 10 patients. Though this study is part of early stage research, Dr. Napoli is hopeful that focused ultrasound will one day be a treatment option for women with breast cancer.
