  • The one-transducer system uses real-time photoacoustic in situ temperature monitoring.
  • It will be used to treat glioblastoma models.

Development of a Multi-Functional Preclinical Device for the Treatment of Glioblastoma

A collaborative group of researchers in France recently published a description of their new preclinical device that provides both focused ultrasound blood-brain barrier (BBB) opening and continuous wave laser photothermal therapy (PPT). The one-transducer system, which was also designed with real-time photoacoustic in situ temperature monitoring, will be used to treat glioblastoma models. The group performed subcutaneous and transcranial preliminary experiments to demonstrate and validate the functionality of the device. Next steps including evaluating any synergistic effects between focused ultrasound BBB opening and thermal heating with PTT using the flexibility provided by the setup of the system.
