The European Conference on Interventional Oncology (ECIO), which is led by the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE), took place from April 28–May 1, 2024, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. This multi-disciplinary conference is a significant annual event for about 3,000 surgeons, medical oncologists, interventional radiologists, and radiation oncologists in the field of interventional oncology.
While focused ultrasound ablation and histotripsy were not discussed in the main sessions this year, conference presentations included a lot of valuable data on other focal ablation techniques for liver cancer treatment, including microwave ablation, radiofrequency ablation, and trans-arterial chemoembolization (or TACE). Many investigators are also combining ablation techniques with immunotherapy.
“Repeated focal ablation treatments are helping patients with metastatic cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma live longer lives,” said Suzanne LeBlang, MD, the Foundation’s Director of Clinical Relationships. “These treatments are also making it possible for physicians to downstage patients to make them eligible for liver transplants. I can see a similar path for histotripsy of the liver.”
During a leadership meeting, there was discussion about the desire to include focused ultrasound companies in future ECIO conferences. Focused ultrasound companies in Europe, Asia, and the Americas with clinical systems are all encouraged to consider attending and demonstrating their systems at this meeting, as it encourages great interactions with all types of oncologic clinicians.
ECIO 2025 will be held April 13–16 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
