A groundbreaking trial using focused ultrasound to open the blood-brain barrier in Alzheimer’s patients has been listed as one of Nature Communications’ Top 50 Read Articles of 2018 in the life and biological sciences category.
The study, conducted by Nir Lipsman, MD, PhD, and his team at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, was first published in Nature Communications in July 2018. It was simultaneously presented at the Alzheimer’s Association’s International Conference in Chicago.
The pilot trial, which was funded by the Foundation, demonstrated the feasibility and preliminary safety of focally, reversibly, and repetitively opening the BBB in six patients. In January 2019, Sunnybrook announced that Dr. Lipsman and team had begun a Phase 2 trial to build upon their experience and work toward treating Alzheimer’s noninvasively.
Nature Communications published more than 5,000 papers in the last year. In addition to the life and biological sciences category, the journal compiles the Top 50 Read lists in chemistry and materials science, physics, and earth and planetary sciences.
