“Treatment of Chronic Functional Brain Disorders using Transcranial MR-guided Focused Ultrasound”

Daniel Jeanmonod, M.D., University Children’s Hospital, Zurich

Summary: This study aims to assess the precision and safety of Transcranial MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (TcMRgFUS) for the ablation of deep brain targets in the thalamus, subthalamus and pallidum. These areas of the brain are believed to be viable targets for the treatment of functional brain disorders which include Parkinson’s disease, neurogenic pain, tinnitus, epilepsy and neuropsychiatric disorders. This is an investigator instigated study in symptomatic patients. The award is for $100,000, to be utilized during 2009.
