Alan H. Matsumoto, MD, MA, has joined the Foundation as a Senior Advisor for Medical Imaging and Image-Guided Therapeutics.

In this role, he will provide input on the Foundation’s internal and funded research projects that involve medical imaging technology. He will also provide an interface between the Foundation and professional societies and broaden the Foundation’s reach as a representative at important scientific and medical meetings.

An expert in his specialty, Dr. Matsumoto has been on faculty at the University of Virginia (UVA) since 1991, where he is currently Chair and Theodore E. Keats Professor of Radiology in the Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging. He is also Medical Director of UVA’s Focused Ultrasound Center, which was named the Foundation’s first Focused Ultrasound Center of Excellence in 2009.

“We are fortunate to have Alan join us in this newly established role with the Foundation,” said Foundation Chairman Neal F. Kassell, MD. “His connection to the medical imaging community and unmatched expertise in radiologic technology will surely benefit the Foundation’s mission of increasing awareness and advancing focused ultrasound in the clinic.”

Dr. Matsumoto has published more than 300 manuscripts and book chapters, authored a textbook, led or co-led more than 50 clinical trials, and founded and ran an imaging core lab whose work led to the first FDA-approved aortic stent graft.

He currently serves on the editorial boards of three journals and is a member of the American College of Radiology Board of Chancellors and the Novant Health-UVA Board.

Dr. Matsumoto received his BA and MA from the University of California, Santa Barbara and his MD from Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University. He then completed residencies at the University of Massachusetts (internal medicine) and the University of North Carolina (diagnostic radiology), followed by a Fellowship at Georgetown University (vascular and interventional radiology).

“I look forward to this opportunity to help advance the science and clinical application of this cutting-edge technology which is being used to deliver novel and life-changing therapies to patients without the need for any cutting,” said Dr. Matsumoto.
