Segway Inventor, Dean Kamen, To Speak at October 14 Opening of FUS 2012 Symposium

Dean KamenCHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (May 16, 2012) – The Focused Ultrasound Foundation is proud to announce that inventor, entrepreneur, philanthropist and science and technology advocate Dean Kamen will be the featured speaker at the opening reception for the 3rd International Symposium on Focused Ultrasound. He will discuss the role and importance of a topic of utmost importance to everyone involved in advancing focused ultrasound — innovation in healthcare.

Best known as inventor of the Segway — an electric, self-balancing two-wheel human transporter — Kamen began his career by creating the first wearable infusion pump and launching a company, AutoSyringe, to manufacture and market the device. He holds more than 440 patents, many of which are for innovative medical devices that have expanded the frontiers of healthcare worldwide.

Kamen is founder of DEKA Research and Development Corporation, a firm that develops its own inventions and provides R&D support for major corporate clients. In 1989, he founded FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an organization dedicated to motivating young people around the world to understand, use and enjoy science and technology.
