Former US Senator Thomas Daschle is the founder and CEO of The Daschle Group, a Public Policy Advisory of Baker Donelson that advises clients on a broad array of economic, policy, and political issues. In 1978, he was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he served for eight years. In 1986, he was elected to the US Senate and was chosen as Senate Democratic Leader in 1994.
After joining the Foundation’s Council in May 2023, he chose to help advance focused ultrasound through his philanthropy. We recently spoke with Senator Daschle about why he supports the technology.
What is your connection to the Foundation? How did you first hear about the Foundation?
I attended an event in West Palm Beach, Florida, hosted by a close friend of mine. She happens to be friends with Neal Kassell, MD, who was also in attendance. We introduced ourselves, and Neal shared the story of focused ultrasound. I immediately became interested in learning more.
What moved you to get involved?
Healthcare has been my passion for nearly 50 years. It was one of my legislative priorities when I served in Congress and the US Senate. I have written two books on health policy and continue to work on health-related matters in my consulting career.
What excites you most about focused ultrasound and the Foundation.
The technology is revolutionary. It has the potential to profoundly change health care treatments in addressing some of the most complicated and pervasive diseases in the world today. It can save lives and holds the promise of improving the quality of life for millions of people.
Why do you care about focused ultrasound?
I lost a brother to a horrific disease, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). I am very hopeful that ongoing research using focused ultrasound may one day find a successful treatment and cure.
What impact do you hope to achieve through your philanthropy?
I hope my contribution can help fund the vital research that is now underway.
What would you tell others about the Foundation?
I would recommend that everyone hear Beverly McGowan’s story, as I did recently. It will give anyone who listens an appreciation of the power of focused ultrasound and its potential for healing.
What would you tell someone who is considering a gift to the Foundation?
I would tell them to look at it not only as a worthy gift but as an investment. This investment will one day provide huge dividends in saving lives and giving people an opportunity to have healthier ones.
