With the idea of helping patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, a neurologist in Taiwan teamed up with two biomedical engineers and used a rat model to investigate whether a novel focused ultrasound technique could improve blood flow and decrease pain. The team provided either single or multiple treatments and then measured distal blood perfusion, pain, nerve conduction velocity, and distal microvascular and neural fiber densities. Which parameters were most improved by the focused ultrasound application?
