Key Points
- A clinical trial in France used a novel focused ultrasound device – from the University of Utah and Image Guided Therapy – for treating breast cancer.
- The clinical system is a breast-specific, MR-guided device with novel hardware and sophisticated targeting software.
- Ten patients with non-palpable, T0-stage breast cancer were treated without sedation.
Researchers from the University of Utah, the Institut Bergonié, and Image Guided Therapy collaborated to clinically assess a novel focused ultrasound device for treating breast cancer. The new clinical treatment system is a breast-specific, MR-guided device with novel hardware, sophisticated tumor-targeting software, and a volumetric MR protocol. Ten patients with non-palpable, T0-stage breast cancer were treated with focused ultrasound. The treatments, which lasted from 73 to 114 minutes, were considered technically successful in 80% of the patients.
