Project: Launching the Focused Ultrasound Clinical Organization

Project Overview
My project was to develop a business plan and launch strategy for a new clinical society – the International Focused Ultrasound Society (IFUS). The goal was to create a plan for how the society would operate, what programs it would offer, and how it could be financially sustainable. The ultimate aim was to create a structure that supports clinical adoption of focused ultrasound globally.
Results
I researched peer organizations, designed programs and membership models, and built financial projections. I also looked at how it would fit into the broader ecosystem alongside the Foundation and other affiliates. The work I did lays the groundwork for a new clinical society that will help accelerate clinical adoption.

Why were you initially interested in working with the Focused Ultrasound Foundation?
A close colleague referred me to the Foundation and couldn’t say enough good things about its welcoming and passionate team. When I learned more about the mission and impact of the work, it aligned with my goal of working for a purpose-driven organization this summer. I also liked that the project involved building something from scratch: That kind of creative, early-stage work is right up my alley.
What surprised you the most about your internship experience?
I was surprised how much ownership I was given. I expected to support a project, not lead one. It was a good surprise to be trusted with real responsibility and to see my work actually shaping something that will move forward after I leave.
Has your internship affected your career plans?
It confirmed that I want to be on the business side of mission-driven organizations working on strategy, operations, and growth. It also opened my eyes to the range of organizations out there doing meaningful work, beyond the traditional paths I’d been considering.
What is one tip that you would give 2026 summer interns?
Get to know everyone in the office! There are so many kind people at the Foundation that are more than willing to help you.
