Project
Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Research and Literature Reviews
Project Overview
My project involved researching the role AI can play in literature reviews and updating the Foundation’s research databases. My secondary project was assisting in data analysis coding using data collected from a clinical trial.
Project Outcomes
I built and evaluated an AI-driven system that could automate finding and tagging research papers. I also designed an interactive data visual that was embedded in the Foundation’s website that engages different stakeholders in finding relevant research in the field of immuno-oncology.
For my second project, through my data analysis work with my mentor, we worked on identifying biomarkers that could predict whether a patient will respond to focused ultrasound treatment of prostate cancer.
Why were you initially interested in working with the Focused Ultrasound Foundation?
I wanted to be a part of a workplace and industry that was creating real inroads in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Being on the forefront of supporting and pushing innovation in biotechnology is what drew me to the Focused Ultrasound Foundation, because it makes intentional funding and research decisions to create the greatest impact.
What new skills or knowledge did you gain during your internship?
I became well versed in Python and R, two coding languages I was familiar with but had never worked so thoroughly in to build automated programs.
How will your project impact the field of focused ultrasound?
My accomplishments will hopefully facilitate a more streamlined literature review process. Identifying AI platforms to be incorporated in the workflow and the automated program I built using AI should reduce the time cost to researchers.
What is one tip that you would give to 2025 summer interns?
Throw yourself into every facet of the Foundation. Attend every meeting you can to get the best understanding of how it all comes together. Raise your hand, ask a question, share your opinion, and volunteer yourself for projects. Your own advocacy will be your best friend.
