She has achieved the EGOT, meaning she is one of just 17 people to have won the Emmy, the Grammy, the Academy Award – or Oscar, and the Tony. The Council is a dedicated group who provide advice and assist with raising funds and building awareness. WATCH THE RECORDING > Symposium News Graeme Woodworth, MD, Receives the 2022 Ferenc Jolesz Memorial Award Graeme Woodworth, MD, is a neurosurgeon and Director of the Brain Tumor Treatment & Research Center at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The Ferenc Jolesz Memorial Award was established in 2016 to honor the late pioneer in focused ultrasound. Dr. Woodworth will accept the award at the Symposium and present his research on Monday, October 24. Patient News Parkinson’s Patient Story: Focused Ultrasound Clinical Trial Turns Skeptic into Advocate Chuck’s Parkinson’s disease symptoms – including tremors and rigidity – disrupted his personal and professional life. Although Chuck was excited to take part in a focused ultrasound clinical trial, his wife Maureen was hesitant. Now, three months after the procedure, Chuck has resumed his work and hobbies and is preparing for his second focused ultrasound treatment. Current interventions are high-risk, invasive, and can lead to complications, including miscarriage and preterm delivery. This report, by Professor Christoph Lees, MD, FRCOG, describes a UK clinical trial that is investigating focused ultrasound as a noninvasive solution for this condition. Her research involves developing focused ultrasound–based therapies for brain and spinal cord disorders. Ultimately, she wants to use the technology to treat conditions that affect the entire central nervous system. READ THE PROFILE >  Successfully Opening a Larger Volume of the Blood-Brain Barrier In a preclinical study, researchers sought to determine the optimal method to use focused ultrasound and microbubbles to open a larger volume of the blood-brain barrier. The research team also attempted to deliver an immune checkpoint inhibitor to the brainstem. Ultimately, the group is working to develop the technology for treating brainstem tumors. READ MORE >  Cancer Moonshot Scholars Program Aims to Diversify R01 Grant Funding The program, which is supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), seeks to increase applications submitted by early-stage investigators from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. NCI has issued a funding opportunity announcement and is accepting applications until November 8. The program is set to fund 45 new R01 grants over the next three years.
