Researchers in Toronto tested the safety and efficacy of focused ultrasound–induced blood-brain barrier opening to deliver enzyme replacement therapy. The procedure was well-tolerated, and a larger study is being planned. He participated in an early-stage focused ultrasound clinical trial at the University of Maryland and is currently cancer free. Doctors are encouraged but cannot say that he is cured or that his cancer will not return. The clinical trial was performed in Spain with HistoSonics’ prototype focused ultrasound system. Larger clinical trials, called #HOPE4LIVER, are now underway in the US and Europe. READ MORE >  Improving Focused Ultrasound Brain Treatments with MRI Imaging Researchers investigated whether MRI images could be used instead of CT images to calculate the skull corrections needed during focused ultrasound brain treatments. The group determined that MRI could effectively be used to create MR-simulated CT images. Making this change could ultimately help eliminate the cost and radiation exposure associated with CT scans. READ MORE >  Focused Ultrasound—Enhanced Drug Delivery Using the Glymphatic System Researchers recently published the results from a preclinical study on focused ultrasound–enhanced intrathecal drug delivery to the brain. Intrathecal transfer uses the glymphatic system – which is responsible for clearing waste using perivascular channels. The focused ultrasound protocol was successful, safe, and significantly effective for increasing the uptake of small molecules in the brain.
