The challenge will help fund our pipeline of projects...                   October 13, 2022 IN THIS ISSUE Top News | Foundation News | Symposium News | Patient News Research News | Industry News | Webinars | Events     Foundation Receives $2.75 Million Matching Gift to Support Research for Neurodegenerative Disorders The Foundation is funding a pipeline of more than 20 focused ultrasound projects for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, dystonia, essential tremor, and Huntington’s disease. The budget for the existing pipeline is $5.5 million, and more projects are planned in the next three years. To help the Foundation reach this goal, a generous donor has issued a matching challenge, committing $2.75 million to be matched 1-for-1. READ MORE >  New Bibliographic Collection Highlights Focused Ultrasound Immuno-Oncology Publications The Foundation has compiled a publication database that includes almost 100 articles in the field of focused ultrasound immuno-oncology (FUS-IO). This tailored bibliography is now accessible through our Zotero library. The chart at right shows the field’s rapid growth over the past decade. SEE THE FUS-IO COLLECTION >  Cleveland Clinic’s Comprehensive Review of Focused Ultrasound Brain Treatments Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic conducted a comprehensive review of approved and emerging applications of focused ultrasound for treating brain diseases. The article discusses three mechanisms of action and eleven diseases and conditions. Focused ultrasound can deliver acoustic energy through the skull to eliminate defective neurons, introduce drug and biological therapies, and modulate neurons. READ MORE >  Standardization of Focused Ultrasound–Induced Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) Opening Researchers conducted a systematic review of focused ultrasound parameters used to disrupt the blood-brain barrier (BBB) for drug delivery. The team gathered and collated 107 preclinical and clinical studies, summarized the efficacy and safety findings, and identified gaps and limitations for further study. The group concluded that clinical translation will not become robust until protocols and parameters for BBB disruption have been standardized. The trial enrolled 115 participants with localized prostate cancer and was used to support the device’s FDA clearance. These latest results were presented by Laurence Klotz, MD, at the FOCAL 2022 Conference.
