Focused Ultrasound Treatment for Parkinson’s Disease Approved by FDA
  • The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded approval of Insightec’s Exablate Neuro focused ultrasound device to include patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD) suffering from mobility, rigidity, or dyskinesia symptoms.
  • The decision was based on data from the pivotal clinical trial that took place at eight sites in the US, Canada, Japan, and Korea.
  • In 2016, the FDA approved focused ultrasound for the first brain indication – essential tremor. In 2018, it was approved to treat tremor-dominant PD. 
  • There are currently 37 medical centers in the US using Insightec’s device.

  • In September, the Foundation and the Cancer Research Institute hosted a workshop to explore focused ultrasound and cancer immunotherapy.

Foundation Holds Focused Ultrasound for DIPG Workshop
  • On October 27, the Foundation hosted a virtual workshop on focused ultrasound for diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG).
  • DIPGs are highly aggressive and devastating brain tumors that affect young children.
  • The presentations and workshop recording are now available.

Dr. Rowland Illing Joins Foundation's Council
  • Rowland Illing, DM, MRCS, FRCR, is Chief Medical Officer and Director of Public Sector Health International for Amazon Web Services.
  • He treated patients with focused ultrasound during his career as an interventional radiologist.
  • The Council provides strategic advice, assists with raising funds, and builds awareness.

Gene Therapy for Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Gene therapy for Alzheimer’s disease is an experimental treatment that involves modifying brain cells with genes that are programmed to produce therapeutic molecules.
  • The blood-brain barrier (BBB) prevents adequate gene delivery to brain cells.
  • Researchers at Sunnybrook Research Institute used focused ultrasound to improve gene delivery across the BBB.

  • Researchers at VeinSound, a French company, tested their device for treating varicose veins.
  • A study at Ohio State University may allow a larger area of the brain to be treated with focused ultrasound and help patients with severe cancer pain.

Center for Open Science (COS) Hosts Foundation’s Preprint Server, FocUS Archive
  • The Foundation’s preprint server enables the focused ultrasound research community to share findings and more easily collaborate on research.
  • Launched in 2017, the FocUS Archive has become a critical hub of preprint activity in the focused ultrasound community.
  • This blog is a collaboration between the Foundation and COS.

Call for Nominations: ISTU 2022 Awards
  • The International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound (ISTU) is seeking nominations for two prestigious, early-career awards.
  • The awards will be presented at their meeting in June in Toronto.  
  • Nominations are due by December 20, 2021.

Focused Ultrasound Liver Tumor Treatment Receives CMS Reimbursement
  • The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has set a facility procedural payment level of $12,500 for histotripsy of liver tumors.  
  • Histotripsy uses focused ultrasound to mechanically destroy and liquefy target tissue without heating.
  • HistoSonics is sponsoring clinical trials in the US and Europe investigating histotripsy in patients with liver tumors.

Vensica Therapeutics Closes a $16M Funding Round
  • Based in Tel Aviv, Israel, Vensica is developing a platform for ultrasound-assisted drug delivery for several urinary bladder indications.  
  • The funds will support the company’s phase II multicenter clinical trials in Europe and the US.
