Focused Ultrasound Treatment for Parkinson’s Disease Approved by FDA
  • The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded approval of Insightec’s Exablate Neuro focused ultrasound device to include patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD) suffering from mobility, rigidity, or dyskinesia symptoms.
  • The decision was based on data from the pivotal clinical trial that took place at eight sites in the US, Canada, Japan, and Korea.
  • In 2016, the FDA approved focused ultrasound for the first brain indication – essential tremor. In 2018, it was approved to treat tremor-dominant PD. 
  • There are currently 37 medical centers in the US using Insightec’s device.

Gene Therapy for Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Gene therapy for Alzheimer’s disease is an experimental treatment that involves modifying brain cells with genes that are programmed to produce therapeutic molecules.
  • The blood-brain barrier (BBB) prevents adequate gene delivery to brain cells.

  • The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has set a facility procedural payment level of $12,500 for histotripsy of liver tumors.  
  • Histotripsy uses focused ultrasound to mechanically destroy and liquefy target tissue without heating.
  • HistoSonics is sponsoring clinical trials in the US and Europe investigating histotripsy in patients with liver tumors.
