World First in ALS: New Trial Tests Focused Ultrasound Plus Immunotherapy

Researchers in Toronto are using focused ultrasound to open the blood-brain barrier and deliver an immunotherapy drug in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
The Foundation is partially funding this clinical trial.

Focused Ultrasound Halts Growth of Cerebral Cavernous Malformations

A preclinical study at the University of Virginia found that focused ultrasound could stop cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) from growing.
The results also suggest that the therapy helps prevent future CCMs from developing.

First Transcontinental Remote HIFU Treatment for Prostate Cancer

Teams at two Cleveland Clinic locations – one in Ohio and one in Abu Dhabi – collaborated to remotely treat a patient’s prostate cancer using focused ultrasound.
The urologist in Ohio oversaw the surgical dashboard while the team in Abu Dhabi, where the patient was located, managed on-site execution.

HistoSonics announced that Blue Cross Blue Shield and Blue Care Network will now cover eligible Michigan patients with primary and metastatic liver tumors.
The Edison system is being used at more than 50 sites in the US.

Preclinical Research: Ultrasound-Guided Blood-Brain Barrier Opening Achieved with Diagnostic Probe

A multisite team from Italy used a custom ultrasound system to simultaneously open the blood-brain barrier and monitor real-time microbubble distribution.
This research was partially funded by the Foundation, and four of the authors are former global interns.
