Read about groundbreaking research from Toronto...                   March 25, 2021 IN THIS ISSUE Top News | Foundation News | Research News | Industry News | Webinars | Events     Focused Ultrasound–Enhanced Blood Test for Brain Tumors: World-First Results Published Liquid biopsy is a blood test used to diagnose and monitor treatment of brain tumors. Nine patients with glioblastoma (GBM) underwent liquid biopsy before and after focused ultrasound treatment that disrupted the blood-brain barrier to enhance chemotherapy delivery. This first-in-human study – recently published in Neuro-Oncology – found focused ultrasound enriched the amount of circulating brain tumor biomarkers in the peripheral blood. Scientists in Madrid tested the safety of using focused ultrasound plus microbubbles to open the blood-brain barrier in these patients. Early evidence suggests this method could deliver therapeutics to prevent or reduce cognitive symptoms. These brain circuits are responsible for important cognitive, sensory, and motor functions. Bold signal and perfusion changes were observed in the targeted regions, and the results were published in Scientific Reports.
