Global Experts Share Latest Advances at ISTU
More than 220 attendees gathered in Tel Aviv for the International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound (ISTU) 16th International Symposium. The meeting provided an opportunity for scientists, engineers, clinicians, and industry to share new research findings, exchange ideas, and foster collaboration. The symposium featured over 100 presentations, including updates from several ongoing clinical and technical studies and 60 posters on early stage research. Scientific highlights included:
- Advances in blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, including interim results from a Phase I clinical trial.
- Presentations on emerging applications of FUS, including the effects of hyperthermia and cavitation.
- Maria Eleni Karakatsani of Columbia University earned the Nadine Barrie Smith Award.

ISTU Features Live Brain Treatment
ISTU attendees were virtually transported via teleconference from the meeting space to a high-tech operating room at Rambam Medical Center to witness a live broadcast of a focused ultrasound treatment on a patient with essential tremor. The three-hour procedure was conducted by neurosurgeon Menashe Zaaroor, neurophysiologist Alon Sinai, neurologist Ilana Schlesinger, and radiologist Dorit Goldsher, and the results were immediate.
