Tom Ryder Joins Foundation Board of Directors
  • Thomas O. Ryder, a former Amazon director, is the newest member of the Foundation’s Board.  
  • Ryder was Chairman and CEO of the Reader’s Digest Association and President of multiple divisions at American Express.   
  • He is also an essential tremor patient who was treated with focused ultrasound in 2021.

Foundation’s Council Welcomes New Co-Chairs
  • Nora Seilheimer and Jane Metcalfe will now lead the Foundation’s Council. 
  • Longstanding co-chairs Jane Batten and Charles Seilheimer, Jr. have stepped down from their roles but will continue as active members of the group. 
  • The Council provides strategic advice, assists with raising funds, and builds awareness.

In Memory of David B. Heller

We fondly remember David Heller, as tomorrow, March 11, marks the 10th anniversary of his passing. David was an extremely energetic and enthusiastic champion of focused ultrasound who saw its potential early on and supported the Foundation generously with his time and money. He was a member of the Board during the Foundation's formative stage, and his contributions were instrumental in the development of the organization and advancing the entire field of focused ultrasound. In addition, David was a great friend.

Abstract Submission Open for Symposium 2022
  • We welcome abstracts related to the use of image-guided focused ultrasound, and a detailed list of topics of interest is available on the website.
  • The deadline for abstract submission is May 16.
  • The 8th International Symposium on Focused Ultrasound will be held October 23-28 in Bethesda, Maryland.

Focused Ultrasound Pioneer Yoav Medan, PhD, to Receive Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Yoav Medan, PhD, has devoted more than 23 years to advancing focused ultrasound as Vice President at Insightec and in advisory roles.
  • The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented at the Symposium and recognizes an individual who has worked to establish the field and improve the lives of patients.

  • After treatment, she was able to return to her job as a family nurse practitioner working with veterans.

  • The study aims to determine tolerability, safety, and feasibility for treating central brain tumors in adolescents and young adults.
  • Early results indicate that focused ultrasound ablation of these tumors is safe.

Novel and Affordable 3D Printed Transcranial Focused Ultrasound Device Developed
  • Hong Chen, PhD, and her team have designed and tested a low-cost 3D-printed transcranial focused ultrasound transducer for preclinical research.
  • The transducer can be connected to a stereotactic head frame and used at three frequencies.
  • Laboratories can print their own device for approximately $80 in materials.

NIH Publication Features Focused Ultrasound Pain Project
  • The NIH’s Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative recently featured funded projects impacting the opioid crisis.
  • One such project is a preclinical study developing a novel device for focused ultrasound neuromodulation to relieve sickle cell disease pain.
  • There are six HEAL projects that are using focused ultrasound to treat pain.

Funding Available for Translational Projects to Address ALS
  • The ALS Association has a grant opportunity for preclinical projects assessing therapeutics for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with a high probability of reaching the clinic within three years.
