New Trial of Focused Ultrasound for Pediatric Brain Cancer
  • Researchers at Children’s National Hospital have begun a clinical trial to address deadly pediatric brain tumors called diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG).
  • The trial will use focused ultrasound—induced sonodynamic therapy to kill tumor cells.
  • Another clinical trial for DIPG using focused ultrasound to disrupt the blood-brain barrier is being planned for later this year at Children's National.

Foundation Event Raises Awareness of Focused Ultrasound for Brain Disorders
  • The Foundation hosted a local awareness event for supporters and friends in the community.
  • Presentations covered current research for brain tumors, psychiatric conditions, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.
Symposium News
Thank you to the more than 300 clinicians and researchers who submitted abstracts for the Symposium. Presentation notifications will be sent in early August.

Preliminary Symposium Program Now Available
  • The program outlines daily topics to be addressed; however, the schedule will be weighted according to the number of abstracts for each category.

First Patient Treated in Focused Ultrasound Trial to Enhance Radiotherapy
  • A new clinical trial in Taiwan is using the NaviFUS® focused ultrasound system in combination with radiotherapy in patients with primary brain tumors.
  • Preclinical studies suggest that opening the blood-brain barrier to enhance oxygenation of brain tissue could make radiotherapy more effective.
  • The Foundation is funding this eight-patient trial.

New Cancer Immunotherapy Platform Harnesses Power of Therapeutic Ultrasound
  • Researchers at MD Anderson have developed and tested a new therapeutic ultrasound treatment platform that improves two types of cancer immunotherapy.
  • The system is called “MUSIC,” or Microbubble-assisted, UltraSound-guided Immunotherapy of Cancer.
  • MUSIC can be used to image and burst microbubbles that have accumulated on tumors.
