New Trial of Focused Ultrasound for Pediatric Brain Cancer
  • Researchers at Children’s National Hospital have begun a clinical trial to address deadly pediatric brain tumors called diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG).
  • The trial will use focused ultrasound—induced sonodynamic therapy to kill tumor cells.
  • Another clinical trial for DIPG using focused ultrasound to disrupt the blood-brain barrier is being planned for later this year at Children's National.

Patient Shares Her Experience in Focused Ultrasound Trial for Liver Tumors
  • When Heather’s cancer spread to her liver, she participated in the #HOPE4LIVER focused ultrasound clinical trial.
  • She was treated last October by an all-female team in Wisconsin, and her tumors haven’t recurred.
  • The trial, which uses histotripsy to mechanically destroy target tissue, recently completed enrollment.

  • A new clinical trial in Taiwan is using the NaviFUS® focused ultrasound system in combination with radiotherapy in patients with primary brain tumors.
  • Preclinical studies suggest that opening the blood-brain barrier to enhance oxygenation of brain tissue could make radiotherapy more effective.
  • The Foundation is funding this eight-patient trial.

New Cancer Immunotherapy Platform Harnesses Power of Therapeutic Ultrasound
  • Researchers at MD Anderson have developed and tested a new therapeutic ultrasound treatment platform that improves two types of cancer immunotherapy.
  • The system is called “MUSIC,” or Microbubble-assisted, UltraSound-guided Immunotherapy of Cancer.
  • MUSIC can be used to image and burst microbubbles that have accumulated on tumors.

  • The 2022 AUA Annual Meeting was held in New Orleans from May 13–16.

  • HistoSonics announced that parallel clinical trials in the US and Europe to evaluate histotripsy to destroy liver tumors have completed enrollment.
  • Histotripsy involves using focused ultrasound to mechanically destroy and liquefy targeted tissue.
  • The company plans to use the data to apply for US Food and Drug Administration approval.
