January 13, 2022 IN THIS ISSUE Top News | Foundation News | Research News | Industry News | Events     Focused Ultrasound for Metastatic Colorectal Cancer: First Patient Enrolled in Clinical Trial Oxford-based OxSonics Therapeutics announced that the first patient was dosed in a clinical trial evaluating their SonoTran platform for treating colorectal cancer that has spread to the liver. The SonoTran platform is designed to actively pump unmodified oncology drugs at the site of solid tumors to enhance their effectiveness. Nearly 50 patients with liver metastases will be enrolled at Oxford University Hospitals. READ MORE >  Women in Focused Ultrasound Initiative Helps Student with Job Shadowing Experience A Brigham Young University student gained job shadowing experience thanks to the Foundation’s initiative. Viola Rieke, PhD, at the University of Utah invited the student to observe focused ultrasound experiments in the laboratory. The Foundation’s Women in Focused Ultrasound group is open to all. READ MORE >  Focused Ultrasound and Cancer Immunotherapy: Research Funding Available The Foundation seeks to fund cancer immunotherapy projects that address focused ultrasound’s effects on the tumor vasculature or partial versus total tumor ablation outcomes. His work primarily involves treating movement disorders – like essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease – and pain. The Maryland team offers focused ultrasound both in clinical trials and commercial treatments. Funded projects are addressing mental disorders, brain tumors, pediatric rhabdomyosarcoma, pancreatic cancer, and two veterinary cancer applications. READ MORE >  Foundation-Funded Research Update: Carbon Nanotube Transducers for Blood-Brain Barrier Opening Dong-Guk Paeng, PhD, and his team at Jeju National University in Korea recently completed a Foundation-funded research project. The group sought to determine whether an alternate focused ultrasound technology could be used to open the blood-brain barrier. The experiments showed disappointing results but led to new hypotheses. READ MORE >  BRAIN Initiative to Fund Innovative Technologies to Clinical Studies The NIH Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies® (BRAIN) Initiative seeks to transition relevant technologies to first-in-human studies. Relevant projects include those developing novel noninvasive brain stimulation devices for the central nervous system. Researchers can submit projects through the NIH Blueprint MedTech program by February 18. LEARN MORE >  Research Funding Available for Pain Management Solution Projects The US National Institutes of Health is providing research grants for nonpharmacological solutions for pain management in military populations. Available grants may range from $500,000 for one year up to $1 million per year for four years. Letters of intent are due by February 15, and full proposals must be submitted by March 15.
