Foundation Council Welcomes Tony and Jonna Mendez |
|
The Foundation's Council is now under increased "surveillance" with the addition of retired Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officers Jonna and Tony Mendez. Together the couple has more than 50 years of service to the United States, and both are decorated heroes. Tony is also an author and award-winning painter; Jonna is a fine art photographer, a consultant/lecturer, and an author. ARGO, one of Tony's autobiographical books, became an Academy Award-winning movie.
Due to Tony's Parkinson's disease diagnosis, the couple appreciates first-hand the urgency of the Foundation's mission: this technology needs to be widely available as soon as possible. Because both Tony and Jonna believe in the potential of this technology to revolutionize treatments for patients like Tony, they have eagerly accepted our invitation to join the Council. We are thrilled that this talented, involved, and extremely interesting couple will help us in our ongoing quest to make this treatment available to patients in the shortest time possible. Read more about the Mendezes, their life work, and their charitable causes.

"Patients can return to work the next day. It's cutting-edge technology without any cutting." - Alan Matsumoto, MD

PBS Program Features UVA's Focused Ultrasound Center |
|
Our regional public broadcasting station (PBS) prompted viewers to "Explore an ultrasound center to discover cutting edge uses for one of today's most promising technologies." On January 30th, WHTJ's program Charlottesville Inside-Out aired a story on the University of Virginia's Focused Ultrasound Center. The 12-minute segment features interviews with Drs. James Larner, Alan Matsumoto, Rich Price, and Jeff Elias. One of the most striking moments in the clip is when essential tremor patient Bert Adamson shows how his previously "good" hand is shaking while his previously "worse" hand remains still. It has been two and half years since his procedure. "I test it every morning," he said, "while drinking my coffee."

Stanford Recruiting Patients in Soft Tissue Tumor Study |
|
Researchers at Stanford University are now recruiting 30 patients to participate in a feasibility study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of focused ultrasound for treating soft tissue tumors, such as sarcoma or desmoid tumors. This study is being led by radiologist Dr. Pejman Ghanouni and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Raffi Avedian. Drs. Ghanouni and Avedian received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval and were awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to conduct this study based on their experience treating five patients on a compassionate use basis. The pair plans to present their preliminary findings at the ISTU meeting in April.
"We applaud the initiative taken by Drs. Ghanouni and Avedian. They identified a serious medical condition with an unmet clinical need that focused ultrasound could potentially treat; they obtained regulatory approval to do the study; and they presented a compelling case to be awarded NIH funding," said Dr. Neal F. Kassell, Foundation Chairman. "We are hopeful that focused ultrasound will be an effective non-invasive treatment option for this devastating disease."
