Lockhart Postdoctoral Fellowship in Focused Ultrasound and Immuno-Oncology Established The Fellowship will foster early-stage investigators in the field of focused ultrasound in immuno-oncology. The Lockhart family generously established the program in honor of Andrew J. Lockhart. The award will provide a one-year stipend of $75,000; interested parties are invited to apply by May 31. READ MORE > More Foundation News UMC Utrecht Named Focused Ultrasound Center of Excellence | Image Sciences Institute Patient News Essential Tremor Patient Sees ‘100% Improvement’ After Focused Ultrasound Janice was treated at the University of Utah. She enjoys her hobbies again and hopes to have the other side treated soon. The US FDA approved focused ultrasound therapy for essential tremor in 2016. WATCH HER STORY > Research News NaviFUS Publishes Initial Glioblastoma Clinical Trial Results Results from the first-in-human pilot trial using the NaviFUS device to open the blood-brain barrier in six patients with recurrent glioblastoma were published in Science Advances. Researchers used a device that combines neuronavigation and a manually operated, frameless focused ultrasound system. READ MORE > Focused Ultrasound for Prostate Cancer: Data from Two Trials Published Two recent studies investigated focal therapy for low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer. One study reported similar outcomes between focal therapy versus radical prostatectomy after eight years. Another focal ablation trial treated 44 men with intermediate-risk disease under MRI guidance. READ MORE > Focused Ultrasound Fine-Tunes Gene Therapy for Brain Applications A University of Virginia team explored varying focused ultrasound energy levels to deliver gene therapy to the brain. Researchers were able to preferentially deliver genetic material to specific types of brain cells. Various pressure levels enabled the genes to reach cells within and beyond the blood-brain barrier. READ MORE >  Using Focused Ultrasound Neuromodulation to Treat Inflammatory Bowel Disease   Scientists sought to determine whether neuromodulation with focused ultrasound could treat inflammatory bowel disease in a preclinical model. Compared to a control group, the therapy resulted in improved stool consistency, reduced bleeding, and healthier colons. READ MORE >  Call for Focused Ultrasound Journal Submissions  Frontiers in Neurology’s Experimental Therapeutics section has launched a research topic on Current State and Future Directions of Cranial Focused Ultrasound Therapy. Abstract submissions are due by March 21, 2021. The topic editors for the issue are Vibhor Krishna, Francesco Sammartino, J. Levi Chazen, and Aristide Merola.
