Eliza Phillips Joins Foundation as Managing Director, Development
  • Eliza Vellines Phillips is a seasoned executive with experience in raising funds, designing and implementing advancement programs, and recruiting fundraisers.
  • She established Phillips Philanthropy Advisors, a successful independent philanthropic advisory firm, and previously worked at the University of Virginia and The Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello.
  • She will lead the Foundation’s efforts in fundraising and increasing awareness of the technology.

Jonathan Simons, MD, Joins Foundation’s Cancer Immunotherapy Scientific Advisory Board
  • Dr. Simons is a physician-scientist, oncologist, and investigator in translational prostate cancer research.
  • He is the Chief Science Officer and Medical Director at the Marcus Foundation and was the President and CEO of the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
  • The cancer immunotherapy scientific advisory board provides advice and counsel in the activities of the program.

  • The Foundation’s Associate Chief Medical Officer, Lauren Powlovich, MD, recently presented an overview of focused ultrasound applications for brain tumors.

  • Carthera has announced the publication of clinical trial results from its first study in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Nine participants underwent blood-brain barrier opening of the supra-marginal gyrus region of the brain twice per month for 3.5 months.
  • The procedure was safe and well tolerated.

Focused Ultrasound Activates Tumor-Suppressing Bacteria
  • Researchers at Caltech are using focused ultrasound hyperthermia to activate tumor-suppressing bacteria that release anti-cancer drugs.
  • The application of focused ultrasound to activate the genetically engineered strain of E. coli bacteria limited tumor growth in a preclinical model.
  • The study was recently published in Nature Communications.
