She established Phillips Philanthropy Advisors, a successful independent philanthropic advisory firm, and previously worked at the University of Virginia and The Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello. She will lead the Foundation’s efforts in fundraising and increasing awareness of the technology. READ MORE > Foundation News Bubble Activity in Focused Ultrasound: Workshop White Paper and Presentation Videos Now Available A white paper summary for the Detecting, Mapping, and Quantifying Bubble Activity in Therapeutic Ultrasound virtual workshop has now been published.   The video recordings have also been released on Youtube. The Foundation and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine's Future Fund hosted the six-week event. READ THE WHITE PAPER > WATCH THE RECORDINGS > Jonathan Simons, MD, Joins Foundation’s Cancer Immunotherapy Scientific Advisory Board Dr. Simons is a physician-scientist, oncologist, and investigator in translational prostate cancer research. He is the Chief Science Officer and Medical Director at the Marcus Foundation and was the President and CEO of the Prostate Cancer Foundation. The cancer immunotherapy scientific advisory board provides advice and counsel in the activities of the program.   READ MORE > Field Overview: Focused Ultrasound for Brain Tumors The Foundation’s Associate Chief Medical Officer, Lauren Powlovich, MD, recently presented an overview of focused ultrasound applications for brain tumors. She addressed current clinical trials and the Foundation’s efforts to fund additional research for glioblastoma and diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma. Nine participants underwent blood-brain barrier opening of the supra-marginal gyrus region of the brain twice per month for 3.5 months. The procedure was safe and well tolerated. READ MORE >  Focused Ultrasound Activates Tumor-Suppressing Bacteria Researchers at Caltech are using focused ultrasound hyperthermia to activate tumor-suppressing bacteria that release anti-cancer drugs. The application of focused ultrasound to activate the genetically engineered strain of E. coli bacteria limited tumor growth in a preclinical model. All funded projects this quarter are brain projects, ranging from improving treatment planning to treating brain metastases and delivering gene therapy for neurological disorders. READ MORE >  Researchers Develop Simulation Models to Compare Treatment Planning Techniques When neurosurgeons evaluate patients for focused ultrasound brain treatments, they use treatment planning software. In other fields, treatment planning software can also be used to predict the outcome of the treatment. Researchers are working to add outcome predictions for focused ultrasound.
