Outlook 2013: Advances in brain treatments are a bellwether for focused ultrasound's future

Foundation reports 2012 highlights

By all standards, 2012 was a busy and productive year for the Focused Ultrasound Foundation. From funding research and building awareness to convening the 3rd International Symposium on Focused Ultrasound and fostering collaborations among researchers, the Foundation's activities had a larger-than-ever impact on the field of focused ultrasound and its many stakeholder groups.

Research Awards Program funding clinical trial for knee osteoarthritis

Motohiro Kawasaki, MD, PhD

Motohiro Kawasaki, MD, PhD and his colleagues at Kochi Medical School in Japan have received $100,000 from the Focused Ultrasound Foundation's Research Awards Program to determine if treatment with MR-guided focused ultrasound is safe and effective in alleviating pain and improving mobility for elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Focused ultrasound is topic of awareness events in Florida

The Focused Ultrasound Foundation kicked-off its 2013 awareness-building activities in January with events in Florida featuring talks by Chairman Neal Kassell, MD. Organized by Foundation Council member Kitchie Tolleson, the events drew more than 150 people and included dinners at the Gulf Stream Bath and Tennis Club and at the Gulf Stream Golf Club. Also in attendance was Foundation Council member Jack Syer.

"The Foundation Council is dedicated to helping the Foundation raise awareness of focused ultrasound, and these events provide a great opportunity to do so," said Director of Development Kimberly Skelly. "We appreciate Mrs. Tolleson for generously organizing these events."

Philips pivotal uterine fibroid study now recruiting patients in USA, Canada and Korea

Three sites are now recruiting uterine fibroid patients for a Phase II/III study assessing the safety and efficacy of the Sonalleve MR-guided focused ultrasound system manufactured by Philips Healthcare. The study – Philips Pivotal Clinical Trial for MRI-HIFU of Uterine Fibroids – is expected to enroll 224 women between 18 and 50 years old and represents the next leg of Philips' journey toward FDA approval of its Sonalleve MR-HIFU system as a treatment for uterine fibroids.

Clinical trial is evaluating Theraclion's ultrasound-guided device in treating bone tumor pain

Theraclion's new clinical trial is using the
EchoPulse system to treat bone tumor pain.

Although it is a small start-up company, French device maker Theraclion continues to break important ground for therapeutic ultrasound. The company's latest first is the launch of a clinical trial using ultrasound-guided focused ultrasound to treat pain associated with metastatic bone tumors. Underway at the Institut Gustave-Roussy, the study is expected to treat 10 patients using Theraclion's mobile EchoPulse System.

Information about InSightec's Parkinson's disease clinical trial posted online

The ExAblate Neuro is now treating patients in the Parkinsonian tremor study.

Complete information about the clinical trial assessing focused ultrasound as a treatment for tremor related to Parkinson's disease is now posted on clinicaltrials.gov under the title, ExAblate Transcranial MR Guided Focused Ultrasound for the Treatment of Parkinson's Disease. Funded in part by the Focused Ultrasound Foundation, the InSightec-sponsored study is underway at the University of Virginia and has a recruitment goal of 30 patients with medication-resistant Parkinson's disease.

In memoriam: focused ultrasound pioneer, George Holland, MD

Colleagues in the focused ultrasound community are grieving the loss of George A. Holland, MD, a leading American interventional radiologist who was an expert in magnetic resonance imaging and minimally invasive treatment of solid organ tumors. As Director of MRI at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts, Holland helped pioneer the use of focused ultrasound in treating uterine fibroids and was first to manually interleave treatment spots, a technique that is now a standard of care.

Therapeutic Ultrasound Winter School, Des Houches, France
Topics will range from an introduction to the physics and biophysics necessary to understand therapeutic ultrasound techniques to their clinical application. The school will provide a current overview of the field as a contextual background for the work of participants and encourage discussion and shared consideration of different approaches to understanding ultrasound therapy.
