On April 28, 2020, Elisa Konofagou, PhD, of Columbia University, discussed the latest preclinical advancements using focused ultrasound for Parkinson's disease.

Recent preclinical, laboratory studies have demonstrated focused ultrasound’s ability to safely and temporarily open the BBB, improving the delivery of various neurotherapeutics that could have the ability to slow the progression of the disease, halt the degeneration of nerves within the brain, and even promote healthy nerve tissue regeneration.

About the Speaker
Dr. Konofagou received a BS in chemical physics from Université de Paris 6 in 1992, a MS in biomedical engineering from Imperial College (London, UK) in 1993 and a PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Houston in 1999. She is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and in 2007 she received the NSF CAREER Award.
