Project
Focused Ultrasound for Gene Therapy Review

Project Overview
I had the great opportunity of working with Dr. Natasha Sheybani this summer on the focused ultrasound for gene therapy program. I am evaluating the state of the field to contribute to the Foundation’s gene therapy mega-document and began working on a review paper.

Project Outcomes
My internship is still ongoing, and I have yet to report on my findings for this summer. However, I look forward to working with Dr. Sheybani.

Why were you initially interested in working with the Focused Ultrasound Foundation?
As a neuroscience major, I am very passionate about treatments for neurological diseases, and I find the Foundation’s work to be essential in the field of noninvasive treatments. I am especially interested in the work using blood-brain barrier opening for gene delivery, because it is becoming increasingly relevant in the clinical setting.

What was the most important learning point of your internship experience?
I am learning the importance of communication, whether that is in a verbal manner with colleagues, or in a scientific manner explaining complex topics. I am also practicing my research and scientific writing skills.

How will your accomplishments impact the field of focused ultrasound?
The completion of a state of the field review paper will serve as an educational resource, as there are currently only a few papers with up-to-date reports on the status of gene therapy with focused ultrasound.
