Project: Sonication Feedback and Control

Changzhu1 300Overview and Goal: The goal of this project was to find a way to comprehensively control each focused ultrasound sonication on tissue and provide more reliable and predictable information during treatment. We used a homemade, closed-loop system to control each sonication output, generate a desired temperature, and then verify the location and size of the lesion.

Results/Findings/Outcomes: We found that we were able to control the sonications well, and the protocol restricts the overshooting output allowing us to reach the desired temperature. However, we also found that the ultrasound system is confused by certain signals from the cooling system and an algorithm to fix this would be desirable.

“This is the first time for me to see such innovative and promised technology implemented on real treatment with minimized injury. I’m excited about therapeutic outcomes of focused ultrasound system, and I’m glad to extend my future research in this field. The experiences during this summer internship will definitely become a very important foundation of my knowledge on therapeutic ultrasound.” –on his experience as a FUSF intern

“I think the communication with the experts from different field is very important. Personally, the most fruitful achievement to me is knowing everyone at the Foundation. I hope we can keep contact for a long term.” –on the most important learning point of his internship experience
