Projects: Monteith Epilepsy Feasibility Study, FUSF disease and condition database

Intern Ted Kelly

Overviews & Goals: I worked on two ongoing projects this summer. The first one is Dr. Monteith’s epilepsy feasibility study, which is examining the safety, efficacy, and feasibility of treating epilepsy with focused ultrasound. I analyzed the data and created useful graphs and graphics to help the neurosurgeons create a clear picture of their results. My images will be used when presenting study results.

In the second project, I compiled a list of all the diseases and conditions that are currently being treated with focused ultrasound. My summary includes background information, current treatment options, focused ultrasound treatment, and notable papers for each indication. These summaries will be used on the Foundation’s website.

Results/Findings/Outcome: Both projects are ongoing.

“I’m currently applying to medical school, so I jumped at the chance to work on innovative, meaningful research that could impact countless future lives. It’s not often that technologies are discovered that have such widespread application to the field of medicine. Furthermore, the opportunity to work with someone as distinguished and respected as Dr. Kassell was too great to pass up.” – on why he was interested in working at the Foundation

I’ve really enjoyed my experience here. Besides learning a great deal about focused ultrasound, the foundation has a very inviting, family feel. My past research experiences have been very isolating -- usually just 1 or 2 people working in a lab with limited interaction with peers and supervisors. The foundation internship has been a welcome change. The plentiful interaction with senior members of the foundation and the interns. We’ve all learned a lot from each other. – on his experience as a FUSF intern

“I hope that the epilepsy feasibility study will pave the way for clinical trials and the eventual treatment of patients with epilepsy. My work on the Foundation website will provide anyone interested in the technology to gain insight into the many diseases and conditions that are being treated and that can potentially be treated with focused ultrasound.” – on how his accomplishments will impact the FUS field
