Research Spotlight: New Targets in Treating Essential Tremor

Published:

A novel presentation during last month’s joint meeting of the International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound (ISTU) and the European Focused Ultrasound Charitable Society (EUFUS) that warrants notice from the neurosurgical community was delivered from the group led by Professor Wladyslaw Gedroyc at Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust in London.

In “Beyond the Thalamus – Unilateral MR-guided Focused Ultrasound for the Treatment of Essential Tremor Targeting the Ventralis Intermedius Nucleus and the Zona Incerta,” the team describes their experience ablating not one, but two targets in 13 patients with essential tremor.

Dr. Gedroyc said that the idea for including the ZI as a target came from this deep brain stimulation article. Could there be an additional benefit in lesioning both the ventralis intermedius nucleus and the zona incerta in a unilateral focused ultrasound procedure?
